Giorgia Meloni with Fratelli d’Italia wins the first political elections after the pandemic on all fronts: as a leader, as a party, as a coalition and as the heir of Berlusconi, ousting Lega and Forza Italia which stop below ten percent. The secretary of the Democratic Party, Enrico Letta, loses everything: after the failure of the axis with the 5Stelle Movement and the alliance with Carlo Calenda, today the predictable rejection of the voters arrives and will open the showdown in the party. Little consolation for the left is the fall of Matteo Salvini who, like Letta, will soon have to deal with his parents.
But the agenda of Giorgia Meloni, the first woman candidate to go up to Palazzo Chigi as Prime Minister, is immediately an obstacle course. To avoid damage to the political, economic and entrepreneurial image of Italy abroad and on the markets, the wave of distrust that the American television broadcaster CNN summarized yesterday with the title: “Meloni the premier most a right from the time of Mussolini ”.
In fact, it is not the first time that the former exponents of the national right have entered an Italian government. The then leader Gianfranco Fini had been vice president of the Council between 2001 and 2006 during one of Silvio Berlusconi’s governments. And this has not changed the Italian alignment and commitment within international alliances.
Silvio Berlusconi’s umbrella
But in the next probable post, Giorgia Meloni will not have Berlusconi’s umbrella. She must therefore be herself a little more Berlusconian than she was in the election campaign. And, above all, in reference to the other two co-founders of Fratelli d’Italia, he will have to be inspired much more by Guido Crosetto – with a political past that goes from Christian Democracy to Forza Italia – and much less by Ignazio La Russa, the vice president of the outgoing Senate , notoriously more to the right than many of his party colleagues.
The first declarations and the first public releases will be fundamental. And it is to be hoped that Meloni and him do not think too much about Viktor Orbán’s Hungarian model or the new right that won in Sweden. Our allies of reference in Europe must remain France, Germany and Spain. The commitment to govern in the name of all Italians and for the unity of the country, which Giorgia Meloni recalled in her first speech last night, is in any case an important step to cool the tone of the electoral campaign. We will see what the sequel will be like.
The rescue of Giuseppe Conte
Another sensational blow, also for the alliances of Enrico Letta, is the exit from Parliament of Minister Luigi Di Maio: a career skyrocketed by party agreements in all the latest governments and now cut short by the unquestionable judgment of the voters. Instead, the 5Stelle Movement of Giuseppe Conte is redeemed, with an unexpected result for many, and Carlo Calenda and Matteo Renzi do not disappear. But they remain below ten percent, reduced perhaps to being the tip of the balance themselves.
To return to the winner, Giorgia Meloni will not have an easy life even among allies. Above all: how much will the defeated League be able to give up? In other words: will Matteo Salvini still claim the Ministry of the Interior?
